New front control arms that I got very on sale from Rock Auto, OE Lemforder. Rear sway bar links, fuel filter, and trans fluid fully flushed. No bad signs in the fluid which is reassuring. The new control arms made the biggest difference. No more play in the steering, no more bump and torque steering, no more clunking. It’s quite nice. Next on the list would be wider wheels and tires, and IPD sway bars. And if I was getting really involved, a bigger intercooler and bigger trans cooler....that probably won’t happen, I don’t think this is a super long term car. So good for highway trips, but not the ideal city car/daily.

So good for highway trips, but not the ideal city car/daily.
I have a dream of taking one of these and turning it into my ideal daily driver:
Figuring out how to put a V8 RWD driveline in a V70 while keeping all the interior intact... That combination of wagon space, comfy seats, and solid feel with 250+hp of big displacement NA RWD fury...
But I’m sure I’ll have to keep dreaming...

I mean, there’s room for a longitudinal driveshaft and rear diff in the AWD models....but there’s no room for a longitudinal V8. You’d have to somehow fit the Volvo/Yamaha V8 in there, and fit a V70R trans, if that’s even possible.

I’m not sure I’d say there’s no room, because a Terminator mod motor can fit in a 1st gen Focus...
But I know it would be a very tight fit. The backup plan would be for a large displacement V6 or even a H4 from a Subaru (Talk about a short crankshaft)
.
But, I’m not sure a 200ish hp NA H4 would be the best powerplant for a V70 (And I’m not exactly a fan of turbo subarus).

There’s no way a trans fit in there without heavily modifying the floor and firewall though. 200ish horsepower, might as well keep the stock 2.5T. They’re a more reliable motor than a turbo EJ. A V8 in a 240/740/940 would be a significantly easier time. I still regret not buying a cheap 740 with a 302 and a 5 speed in it

Yeah, I’d definitely opt for the 2.5T over a turbo EJ, but 200+hp out of a NA V8 gives the torque and the power response that I love (I hate turbo lag and non-linear throttle response).
But I still hope that there’s a way it’ll fit without any cutting of the firewall and floor. The V8 Focus swap is a bolt in kit, and a pretty common find on the internets. (Not a cheap kit though, but looks fairly straightforward to copy ). I’ll definitely have to attack a V70 with a tape measure before I give up on the idea completely.
I’m kind of stuck on the V70 as the base because it’s still a “modern” car in my eyes. The older 700 series would be a lot easier to swap, and give some “classic car charm” to the project, but I’m guessing it wouldn’t be as easy to live with every day.
Considering I’m already 2.5 years into a project that will probably take another 3 years before it drives... It’ll probably be a long time before I get to my “ideal daily driver” engine swap project. Maybe V90s will be cheap by then?

That’d be a long roadtrip for me, Nebraska is not the closest state...

1998 S70, 252k, extremely comfy on the interstate. Rattle from the glove box still unresolved. Did the arms and rear shocks are pending warm weather.
